Although residential property values have dropped in some areas of Michigan as a result of slow sales, many homeowners may be underinsured. Michael Rice, vice president of property and casualty insurance at the Karcher Agency in Dearborn, estimates that nearly 30 percent of homes in southeast Michigan fit in this category.
"If your insurance agent hasn't reviewed your policy within the last three to five years and if you've made any home improvements, your policy may not adequately cover the actual costs of replacement also known as "insurance to value," said Rice.
"When's a good time to take a break from cooking and eat out?" Dearborn Speech and Sensory Center suggests that Thursday, February 8, would be a great day to take family and friends to Max & Erma's Restaurant at 6601 Newburgh Road in Westland.
Max & Erma's will donate 20 percent of lunch and dinner sales that day to benefit Dearborn Speech and Sensory Center, which provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy services for children through adults.
"Many of the much-needed services we offer are not covered by insurance," said Lori Shaffer, speech language pathologist and director of Dearborn Speech and Sensory Center. "Donations enable us to help those who could otherwise not afford treatment."

Where you work or went to school can make a difference on the cost of your homeowners and auto insurance, according to the Karcher Agency, an independent insurance firm located in Dearborn.
“Most people are aware of multi-policy discounts or multi-car discounts such as insuring more than one vehicle or insuring both your home and car insurance through the same provider,” said Michael Rice, vice president of property and casualty insurance at the Karcher Agency. “However, there are many more discounts that consumers should be aware of and ask if they qualify for.”
Homeowners and auto operators may benefit from occupational discounts, alumni group discounts, and pre-paid policy discounts. There are also “mature” discounts based on age.
Kathy Yesh, mortgage manager for Community Bank of Dearborn, recently asked Rice for an insurance quote on her family’s two homes and three cars.
“After they reviewed my policies, I was very pleased to get the same coverage through the Karcher Agency at a considerable savings, and I reviewed each line by line,” said Yesh. “Plus, there were no hassles switching over.”

Courtney Czajkowski, customer service representative for the Karcher Agency in Dearborn, was recently named CStaR of the year by Safeco Insurance Company. The honor was presented to the insurance representative in Michigan who quoted and issued the most auto and homeowners business statewide from March through October 2006.
Czajkowski also received three monthly awards during the same period for being the best performer during Safeco’s Michigan-only sponsored contest.
“We are extremely proud of Courtney’s performance and well-deserved recognition,” said Michael Rice, vice president of property and casualty insurance at the Karcher Agency. “She’s relatively new to our team, having joined us from the food service industry less than two years ago. However, she’s become the ‘go-to’ person in our office for personal lines processing, applications, ratings and other requests.”
